ARTISTICSTATEMENT
I am a graphic designer, illustrator, and watercolor artist. I’ve been watercolor painting for many years now, and it has become my favorite artistic medium, although historically it was considered by some as a lesser way of working. I love watercolor’s vibrancy, its translucent quality and the immediency that it has. It allows me the capacity to express myself clearly.
I have always admired Andrew Wyeth and his ability to render a place in a way that captures its story and puts you, the viewer into that place. When I paint flowers, I draw upon the experience of being alongside my wife Cindy in our garden. There, I get a deeper understanding of my subject and its complexity. It becomes my laboratory and my studio. Like Wyeth, my style is very representational and somewhat objective. The subjectivity comes from what I choose to render. I don’t show the entirety of what I paint. I enjoy showing the details of the image and allow that to become an abstraction for the viewer.
My hope is to change the audiences’ perspective as they view my paintings. I want them to see texture and detail that might be missed when seeing the image in an overview.
